You may have noticed that I’m a little obsessed with my dog.

Like many dog owners, I believe that our yellow lab, Maggie, is perfect. Sure, she’s a bit dangerous when she catapults herself two feet into the air out of sheer excitement, and yes, her compulsive need to snuggle regardless of whatever else you’re doing can get a bit exhausting, but I still love her way more than most humans. Sorry I’m not sorry.

You know how I show my love? With baked goods. So it seemed only natural that I bake for Maggie. This morning I looked up a ton of dog treat recipes but was missing an ingredient or two in most of them, so I combined a few and came up with these.

Maggie’s Dog Treat Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup almond butter
  • 1 large banana, mashed
  • 1 cup spelt flour
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
Preheat oven to 300*F. Use a fork to whisk together the first three ingredients until thoroughly mixed, then add flour and oats and stir until well combined. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, and use a 1/4 measuring cup to drop cookies evenly apart. Bake for about 25-30 minutes, or until center is firm and edges are golden brown. Allow to cool completely before giving to your dog! Makes about 8 treats.
They tasted pretty good to me (yes, I tried one), but the real test was Miss Maggie.
Success!!
Though lots of dogs are Hoovers, gobbling up whatever is on the kitchen floor, Maggie is actually quite picky and dainty. She only likes certain foods, like peanut butter, chocolate chip cookies and cherry tomatoes (this is so my dog). And, apparently, these dog treats.
I’m glad. I couldn’t bear to disappoint the love of my life.
