Yesterday, I did something I hadn’t done in at least seven years: I ate a burger.
My parents were in town, and after walking several miles around downtown, we headed to Bareburger in the Village for lunch.
I’ve been wanting to try red meat again, but I also wanted to make sure it came from a good source so that a) I wouldn’t feel sick and b) because red meat is notorious for being inhumanely processed. Bareburger offers up an entire menu of free-range, organic, grass-fed burgers, from bison and elk, to chicken and turkey, to beef and veggie.
They also have a seriously good craft beer menu. Talk about a cool place!
I chose an Abita Amber, which was smooth and malty and went well with the meal.
My parents and I opted to get three different burgers and split them all three ways. My dad chose his favorite, a bison burger:
I got a plain old hamburger on a multigrain bun:
And my mom got the California burger, a veggie patty with raw milk cheddar and avocado:
We also got an order of french fries with a trio of dipping sauces. which were enormous and a highlight of the meal- even once they turned cold from the crisp start-of-fall weather, they were still good.

So, the verdict on the burger? Good! To be honest, I’d kind of forgotten what a burger tastes like. We agreed that my beef burger was the best, while the veggie burger was actually the worst (though still pretty darn tasty). It wasn’t that the taste of the veggie was bad, it was that the texture wasn’t as satiating or enjoyable following the real meat burgers. I don’t really crave meat, but I’d absolutely go back to this place with someone who was in the mood for it.
What I loved most about Bareburger was their emphasis on well-sourced, quality meats. Even in New York, a menu of well-sourced, humanely raised meats this extensive is hard to come by, and is usually quite expensive.
At around $9, these burgers weren’t as cheap as a fast-food joint, but you get what you pay for in terms of both quality and taste, and the restaurant has a fun, laid-back atmosphere. In addition to the burgers, they also have a decent list of salads, wraps, sandwiches and a few brunch items, so you can bring anyone here.
What’s your burger of choice- veggie, turkey, beef, etc?
Wow. Looks tasty! What a great restaurant, and $9 isn’t expensive at all, considering the quality of food.
My favorite burger is a salmon burger, hands down. Sure, I enjoy the occasional veggie, turkey, etc. but there’s something about seafood burgers that just can’t be beat.
That looks like such a cool place! I Love getting meat from all organic sources. I wish there were more restaurants offering options Like this!
I love places that focus on where the food comes from! Sad to hear that their veggie burger wasn’t the best but I think I might be content with those french fries, they look incredible! P.s. you have been making some amazing looking food on your previous posts!
Before I became vegan turkey burgers were my burger of choice, although I always went for chicken or fish over burgers in any situation (except at Epic Burger in Chicago-if you ever have a chance to go-take it!). For now I stick with bean burgers : )
What a great restaurant! When you think of the quality of the food being served, nine dollars sounds extremely reasonable. I really like bison burgers! I wish the meat was more accessible here!
I love homemade chicken burgers with onions, zucchini and peppers mixed in or dr. praegers veggie burgers are the best frozen veggie burgers I have tried.
The occassional organic grass-fed burger is exactly why I could never go completely veg. Delicious
Everyone I know keeps telling me to try Bare Burger. Your meal does look pretty awesome! I recently had my first hamburger in 12 years, and it was kinda good;) I think it’s important to listen to your body and eat red meat whenever you crave it.
Oh those friesss! I actually love veggie and beef burgers <3
I just ate a cheeseburger on Friday too!The cafeteria I work at sources as much local produce, dairy, and meat that we can get. This particular burger was from a local, organic farmer and was a better choice than the highly processed vegan burger we were also offering. I hadn’t eaten a burger in 15 years so I also forgot what real red meat tastes like. It was good! I could only eat about 3/4 of it but surprisingly I did not feel sick afterwards. I guess it goes to show you that when you eat high quality foods in moderate portions, your body responds well!
cute place! I like all kinds of burgers - turkey, beef, bison, black-bean - you name it! Beef is probably my favorite though - standard! I love Abita - their IPA (jackamo sp?) is m y fave!
Oh man, I need to try that place next time I’m in NYC! I opt for turkey or chicken burgers.
gahhh i just heard of bareburger the other day and i’m DYING to go! i’ve been craving bison meat like crazy even though i’ve never had it hahaha i haven’t had red meat in so long either but i would be open to giving it a go again, as long as it wasn’t bleeding hahaha
I havent had a red meat burger since I was about 7 years old. Just gave up red meat (based on taste and texture) at a really young age. Had no idea what I was “doing” but just went by preference.
About once a year I eat some Veggie burgers now. I don’t make them that often just because I dunno…I am just not that into burgers. I’d rather have other things.
I am glad you are trusting your gut and your instincts on all of this and doing what feels true to YOU!
Hands down, I love a good turkey burger. I also eat grass fed beef burgers from time to time and recently had bison and really liked it.
That definitely sounds like a restaurant that you can feel good about ordering from. I wish we had more places here that offer humanely raised meats.
I love a good beef burger from time to time, but only if it’s made by my dad. Otherwise I prefer veggie burgers.
I love that you are trusting your body and eating foods that you haven’t had for a while! I gave up red meat over 10 years ago just because it made me feel sick. I was never really a fan of it anyways (and pretty much skimped on meat in general around dinner time), so my favorite kind of burger has always been a veggie burger believe it or not!
Way to go! I’m proud of you. Not because I am a fan of meat, but for the logic and thought you put behind your decisions in eating.
I love Bareburger! The elk burger is surprisingly good
