Exercise...Fashion?

Sometimes, I really embarrass myself with my running outfits.

Burnt orange + dark blue + neon yellow? Why not?

I got this t-shirt in Park City, Utah on a family vacation last winter to commemorate my mom’s first tequila shot.

She may be a tiny woman, but was seriously impressed by her ability to sip, rather than gulp, the shot. Seriously, who does that?

I’ve gotten several emails and comments asking about my running attire; to be honest, I don’t really wear anything special! I buy sports bras and running socks from Target, shorts from Brooks or Nike, and wear an oversized t-shirt on top. It may not look too classy, but hey, it’s comfy!

* * *

This morning, I set out for a five-mile run. Breakfast before I left was a bowl of Shredded Wheat, blackberries and almond milk.

The run itself was super easy and low-key. I really just wanted to enjoy some “me time” in the beautiful weather! I ran my favorite five-mile route down to Battery Park, not worrying about pace. It felt great!

  • Total Time- 46:39
  • Average pace- 9:19
Though I really wasn’t in the mood for a salad for lunch, I had quite a bit of produce I needed to use before heading home tomorrow. I tried something new to liven up the plain old veggies:

Mexican “Meaty” Mix
-       1/2 block tempeh
-       ¼ c salsa
-       ½ lime worth of juice
-       hot sauce to taste

In a small bowl, use your fingers to crumble tempeh into a ground-beef like texture. Stir in salsa and squeeze in lime juice, then add hot sauce until desired heat is reached. Microwave for 1 minute on medium-high heat, stirring once halfway through. Enjoy!

I served my creation atop a bed of romaine, cucumber, carrots and tomatoes. Definitely a nice way to mix things up!

On the side, I had two bowls of frozen grapes (my fingers are still cold!).

And one of Tina’s peanut butter bars, which I whipped up last night for Mike.

These are totally phenomenal. I had one last night still warm, and I think I actually prefer them chilled!

Busy afternoon ahead- better get moving!

What kind of clothes do you typically exercise in? Any brand recommendations?

Have you ever tried tempeh? If so, what’s your favorite way to eat it?

my exercise clothes are always obnoxiously bright and colorful. i think i trick myself with colorful clothing because wearing them makes me want to work out. i buy stuff from target and old navy!

Ooh that tempeh idea is a great idea! My favourite thing to do with it is with a cashew & banana sauce - pure love,
I have 1 running top, 1 pair of shorts, and some running tights. I have to do a LOT of washing!

I like tempeh bacon, especially in TLTs!

Yea I never wear anything special when I workout either...the ones that do aren't really there for the workout (at least that is how I look at it!)

I like raw tempeh, jam, dijon and arugula sandwiches. :D

I don't go all out and buy expensive things to wear while running - simple, casual does just fine!!

I can't have tempeh :( but it looks amazing!

Haha my mom had her first shot of tequila about a year ago. She was NOT a fan!

I love getting workout clothes at Target. I've gotten great tops and sports bras there, usually the Champion brand.

As for sneakers, I spend around $100, cause otherwise I end up getting foot problems. And I'm very loyal to Saucony. (Maybe TOO loyal!)

As for tempeh, I've never tried it, since I have a supposed soy allergy. Not worth risking it.

Aww I love baking for the boy! I might have to check out those pb bars. And I workout in all sorts of crazy colored stuff! I love that tequila shirt. And next time I get my hands on some tempeh I am making that!!

I LOOOOOVE the Champion brand sports bra they sell at Target. They work so well without being constricting. :)

I am with you... I have no fashion when I am working out. I go for comfort and ease. Although, I wouldn't mind a workout clothes overhaul!

I have never tried tempeh! I never know what to do with it-but this recipe looks delish, so I will just HAVE TO try it out! =)

I never cared about the fashion until I decided to change my life aims and become a fitness professional. Now, I'm always on the lookout for sales on the big brands (Puma, Adidas, Lululemon, UnderArmor, etc)... But the best part about work out clothes, to me, is that bright obnoxious colors can be totally acceptable! But - best place to shop for fitness clothes? TJ Maxx/Marshalls. They always have the best sales!!

btw- I've been microwaving Clif bars lately and holy god they're good.

Blackberries are one of those things that I KNOW I should like but I just don;t. I love all the other berries but just not blackberries. Something about the seeds turn me off.

im a big fan of gap's new(ish) fit line. they have some great stuff that always goes on sale!

My sports bra is from Target and I love it - and I'm the same way...Nike shorts and then pretty much any oversized, free t-shirt I have ever found tops it off.

awww I love park city! What a funny thing to commemorate! LOL My mom's first jello shot was in a bowling alley over t-giving in TExas circa 2005. I was like wow.... what a cool bowling alley. hehe

I wear nike shorts always, most cozy, and asics socks. Sports bras are target/champion or fila yoga tops - so cozy!

I don't care about brand names, but for longer runs I have to wear moisture wicking shirts. The cotton T-shirts just end up making me cold as they get sweaty. And I need running shorts with built in undies! If not my undies drive me bonkers. Unfortunately, a lot of those types of performance wear are only found in brand names, like Nike or Under Armour. I try to get them on sale unless I'm desperate for something. It's not about the looks or the name for me, but being comfy after 10+ miles of running. But at hot yoga (where I am so drenched in sweat it doesn't make a difference), the gym, or out for an easy run/walk, I usually just wear old sorority or event shirts.

i am a complete embarassment when i run. especially outside. i tend to turn to my bright red lifeguarding shorts and a bright yellow Pitt tee. why? who knows. red and yellow seem like a good idea in the moment...

FYI - I haven't commented in a while but i'm still creeping your blog on a daily basis and loving it!!

My uniform is the same as yours, although sometimes I look slightly ridiculous: when I pack my gym bag early in the morning, I tend to just toss a pair of shorts and a tee in the bag. Then it's only when I get to the gym that I realize that I'm in an all bright blue or pink ensemble. I figure that if I get in a good workout though that no one can judge me for wearing colors that I normally steer away from.

hey girlie girl!!
i loved your comment, I am sooo happy that I can inspire other bloggys to be passionate and love running as much as I do.
sometimes I wear super cute running tops, and sometimes I wear the "embarrassing" t-shirts...no shame cuz I fly by those who are stopping to judge me! hehe, jk!
my favorite running tops are nike dryfit tee's and lululemon tanks/run gear tee's...my favorite shorts are nike for training, but UNDERARMOUR or LULULEMON shorts for racing because they are short and soft, which means fast to me. I have specific shorts I wear when I race, they pump me up and make me feel like I'm ready to kick-booty!
I love tempeh but rarely eat it because beans are so much cheaper and easier to add to my dishes.
I heart you girlie and am excited for our upcoming halfs!
xoxo!

i've bought fancy exercise clothes in the past, thinking it would motivate me to go to the gym. no such luck. i like working out in old tshirts and shorts.

I am the frumpiest exerciser ever. It's usually sophie shorts and a big wrinkly t-shirt. I buy my sports bras and socks at target, too.:-)

I love that bowl that your cereal is in!

Cute outfit, I always wear pretty simple running clothes that aren't necessarily matchy! I love tempeh...bbq or wingz!

I usually work out in a frumpy old tee too. I just want to be comfortable! ;) But I do like to shell out a bit of money for my Lululemon shorts and jackets.

I didn't completely love tempeh the last few times I've had it... but that mix you made makes me want to give it another try!

I have to work out in as minimal as clothes as possible because I'm a total sweaty beast!

Love that mexi dish :)

i think we've chatted that we both buy the same 16.99 target sports bras. they rock and they work! wayyyyy better than a $45 nike or lulu. Shorts are a mish mash of running shorts ive collected over the last decade. yes, i break some shorts out from 2001 quite a bit. they fit and i like em!

those bars look great but i just checked, not vegan and not GF :( darn

tempeh dish you whipped up on the fly looks awesome! salsa can pretty much make anything rock i think!

:)

girl, I wear clothes that are a decade old. They are practically rags. lol.

I don't think I've ever tried tempeh :/ I'll admit that I'm sort of intimidated by it!

And as far as exercise fashion goes, I *just* started wearing "cute" workout clothes. But definitely don't be surprised if you see me in raggity gym shorts and one of my dad's old t-shirts :P

Some of my workout gear is from my freshman year in college aka (8 years old.) I try not to wear odd combos but if happens it happens, just as long as they're clean lol I'm in love my Aerie Fit cropped the workout capri, fits like a glove. I'm hoping to stock up for the holidays when they go on sale. :)

Never tried tempeh, I'm tempted though! (haha no pun intended!)
