Cook Together

This evening, I headed up to the Bronx so Mike and I could cook dinner together. And by “cook together,” I mean…

Hehe. I kid, I kid. He actually helped out quite a bit. I'm still the master chef, though J

For our Indian-inspired meal, I sautéed half an onion and two carrots in a few tablespoons of olive oil, then added half a cubed eggplant, a red pepper and a can of chickpeas.

I cheated on the “Indian” aspect and used a jar of Patak’s Rogan Josh sauce, which contained stewed tomatoes and a kick of coriander. It really made the dish!

While I sautéed away, Mike cooked up some Trader Joe’s whole-wheat couscous.

My plate:

I went back for thirds on the veggies…they were so good! Love me some SPICE!

And a whole-wheat pita. Do I ever need an excuse for more carbs?

Though I’d brought packaged cookies to share for dessert, we were both in the mood for a decadent dessert. We headed to an authentic Italian pastry shop, where I ordered this heavenly little thing:

Amaretto-soaked white cake beneath coffee-flavored mascarpone and chocolate mousse, enrobed in chocolate ganache and finished with chocolate shavings.

This confection describes me better than any adjective ever could. It was so sweet that I literally couldn’t finish it- which is very, very rare for me when it comes to dessert. Mike rolled with a chocolate cannoli, which was almost as good ;)

All in all, a lovely night: good food, good company. Mike and I used to go out to eat at least once a week, and while I still love the restaurant experience, we’ve realized how much cheaper it is to cook ourselves!

If you were a food, what would you be?

Cooking in vs. eating out- which do you prefer?

I <3 Indian fodddddd! I actually enjoy both! There is something so comforting about a home cooked meal. But going out is fun and exciting because you can try new things :)

Soo impressed with your cooking! If I were a food I think I'd be carrot cake. A healthy aspect, but also sweet and delicious! I just described myself as delicious. Whatever. =P

1. I'd definitely be a nut. Mostly healthy and versatile!

2. I think there's an ambience to going out. The restaurant, the feeling of getting food that someone else has prepared for you and the people your surrounded by. Especially in new york, there's so many face to see and people watch and such good food to enjoy!

Yum- dinner looks fantastic. That's exactly how my Mike helps me cook too :)

I have no idea what food I would be, but probably something sickeningly sweet.

As much as I love a great dinner out, I am TOTALLY a homecooking person. I just like having that control/creativity, I guess.

That dessert looks killer.

Aww I love cooking with other people. Trader Joe's also makes wonderful jarred curry sauces!

How fun that Mike will cook with you :) Dinner looks great! I also prefer cooking in over eating out. I think I get it from my mom - if I ever want to take her out for a special occasion, she'll say she'd rather I cook for her! We never went out much growing up, either. If we had really good restaurants around here I'd probably go out more, but...we don't! lol

Aww - how cute! and love Indian food!! I love different aspects of both! I love cooking...and actually feeling like you've put yourself into a meal, and - if you're cooking for someone else - the joy they get out of it, too. However, I love going out to eat...trying to new things...getting new ideas...most of the time I walk away from restaurants thinking of ways to make whatever delicious entree I just got more healthy!

I much prefer cooking to eating out, but I am certainly not opposed to it at all! What a sweet little compromise that you made dinner and then went out for dessert. :)

Your dinner looks delicious! I don't like to cook but I don't like spending money going out all the time haha. How about Whole Foods salad bar? Compromise in my book!

Awww what a cute date night :)

I love the "if you were a food" question! I'm surprised I never asked myself that, haha. I'd have to say I'd be a...COOKIE! Because there are many variations to my personality, but deep down I am a sweet person...like a cookie! HAHAH DUH, ME :P

Aw that's so cute that you guys cook together! That meal gave me a great idea for a way to use the eggplant I just bought! I can't wait to try this.

I think I prefer eating out. I don't do it too often, so when I do go out I don't mind spending a little more for a really good meal, so it always feels really special!

most of the time i love to stay in and cook! love knowing what goes into the food i'm eating plus the whole process of cooking is so fun for me - and it's definitely friendlier on the ol' wallet :) although i will say the occasional night eating out is also a fun treat!
