In my mind, New York will always be the most amazing city in the world. There’s nothing like it; my life will always be more exciting when I’m surrounded by taxis and restaurants and every type of person imaginable. Everything seems right on your doorstep, and depending on your mood, you can either lose yourself in the anonymity of millions or make a name for yourself as one in a million. A break from the hustle and bustle is nice every once in awhile, but these past two days have reminded me just how much I love and miss New York!
Monday morning I woke up and had an unpictured Heart Thrive as a snack, then did No More Trouble Zones for the second time. It kicked my booty. Afterwards, I refueled with a bowl of Nature’s Path SmartBran, raspberries and almond milk:
I brought along an apple and banana for the train ride. (Please excuse the abundance of crotch shots in this post.)
As soon as I got settled in NYC, I headed downtown to meet two lovely ladies at Pure Food and Wine for lunch. Pure has been on my go-to list since I moved to the city, and I’ve been dying to meet both Ilana and Kailey forever, so needless to say I was practically skipping down the street with excitement.
The food did not disappoint. I ordered the falafel with tabhouli, topped with lemon tahini sauce and red pepper hot sauce.
I’m pretty sure these were made of mushroom, and while it’s no secret that I hate fungus, these were actually lip-smackingly delicious. Perhaps my tastes are evolving?
While my entrée was undoubtedly delicious, it was a tad small, which was fine because it left plenty of room for dessert.
A raw chocolate mint sundae, to be exact, with chocolate, fresh mint and mint chip ice cream with vanilla cream, chocolate sauce and mint chocolate cookies. Oh yes. I debated shelling out the $16 for this sucker, but it’s one of the best splurges I’ve ever made. Foodgasm doesn’t even begin to describe how deliciously creamy and chocolatey this was.
Even better than the food was the company. I couldn’t have imagined two sweeter, funnier, more real and fabulous girls to meet up with. We spent two and a half hours chatting, and it honestly made me view food, body image and the uncertainty of my future in a completely different way. It was lucky that we stayed so long, because as the restaurant emptied out we saw Adam Levine of Maroon 5 come in with his girlfriend. Clearly, it was fated to be a magnanimous meet up.
After lunch, we hit up Whole Foods, Forever 21, DSW and Trader Joe’s before going our separate ways. I back to the hotel, where I took advantage of the free cocktail hour food with a plate of fruit, veggies and hummus.
Last night, Mike and I headed to Spring Street Natural in SoHo, which specializes in healthy and organic foods. The menu has vegan, vegetarian and omnivore options, so it’s great when you have a lot of different palates!
Mike insisted I try both kinds of bread. The first was a hearty, pumpkin-flavored loaf that tasted like a cross between pumpkin bread and pound cake. Sweet bread before dinner? I’ll take it.
The second was an oat bread that was mildly nutty. Also a winner. I’m so glad Mike appreciates good carbs as much as I do J
To start, I chose a bowl of the most tofu-loaded miso soup I’ve ever had. Usually miso soup isn’t very filling, so I loved the extra ‘fu in this.
For my entrée, I had the steamed organic seasonal vegetables, which came over a bed of brown rice with sesame soy sauce and goddess dressing. In the mix: kale, rainbow chard, carrots, cauliflower and green beans. It looks puny, but I promise that the mountain of rice under there was enough to set the Atkins diet back several decades.
Despite being pretty full from dinner, I always have room for sweets, so I ordered a warm vegan triple-berry almond crumble with strawberry sorbet for dessert. Exquisite. Even better was Mike’s dish of amaretto, mocha and salted caramel gelato. I gladly helped him finish off the mountainous portion of creamy deliciousness.
Today, I had an appointment with a realtor to look at apartments! I took advantage of my hotel’s breakfast buffet and ate a mini-box of HFCS laden Raisin Bran, a mini-box of Cheerios, and fresh fruit (x3).
I spent a few hours meandering before heading downtown to meet the realtor. On the way, I ate a vegan yuba pocket from a random deli, along with a pink lady apple. (Excuse the background, s’il vous plait.)
The apartment hunt went great! I found one place that I love but might be off the market, and two other places I’d be happy with as well. Keeping my fingers crossed!
After the search, I headed back up to Penn Station to catch my train home. Of course, I had to pick up my favorite power-fu sandwich for the ride. (Yet another crotch shot. This is horrible.)
And on the train, I occupied myself with Self and my favorite flavor Larabar:
Despite the hot weather, the over-zealously air conditioned train made crave something warm! I dug into a bowl of Amy’s black bean soup doctored up with tomatoes, cauliflower, carrots and salsa as soon as I got home.
Plus an apple and four squares of Lindt 85% dark chocolate for dessert:
So, after all that food and fun in just over twenty-four hours, how could I not love New York?
What’s your favorite city?
In honor of that delicious bread basket, what’s your bread of choice?
PS- Stay tuned for a 150th post giveaway tomorrow!!

Sounds like an amazing meetup! I'm pretty sure I would have devoured that entire mint chocolate dessert. That bread sounds awesome; my favorite is actually pumpkin bread! The one time I visited NYC I went to this restaurant called Josie's and their bread was SO good, it was this cornbread stuff with a butternut squash (I think?) dipping sauce! I've never had anything like it since!
I have only visited NYC, but I feel the EXACT same time. I think it is fabulous. I would love to live there!
I really love Tampa!

Hello Amazing Food Overload! I was still thinking about your sundae when I got home so obviously I made mint chocolate chip soft serve ... almost as good but not quite. I had soooooooooooo much fun with you two yesterday! I'm still thinking about everything we talked about. Oh and I hit up F21 in Times Square - it's FOUR FLOORS (and they had maxi dresses haha). And I walked into every deli/grocery/corner store I thought might have Laras in search of our coveted new flavors. No luck yet, but obviously you know I'll text you as soon as I see one. Can't wait for you to come back in the fall! We'll dominate this town!
I'm so jealous. I LOVE NYC! I'm at least happy to live so close to it. But I've got to say that I'll always be a Philly girl at heart :)
I'll probably be visiting my best friend in NYC during the Fall...we'll have to meet up there!!
I've never heard of Spring Street Natural! Thanks!
I want to dive in to that raw chocolate mint dessert!!
Glad you got to make a quick visit to the best city in the world. I think it's pretty clear where my alliances are on this one. I may not have "grown up" here but I Grew Up here. Ya know. My heart is here, my body is here, my mind is here. I love that there is so much to do but it's also easy to relax.
Happy Wednesday (almost)!
I LOVE fococia bread...so good! And honestly, I love Atlanta. I've spent almost my whole life here and I feel like it has everything I need/want. I'm glad the apartment hunt went well, enjoy the rest of your week!!

Glad you had an amazing trip to NY! That chocolate sundae looks like it was worth every penny. A girls gotta splurge every now and again. Obviously I have to claim Philly as my favorite city... for now. It's sad that it wont be "home" anymore! So excited for you and all of your up coming adventures!
I love conversations that completely change your way of thought! They are so great, and can be very relaxing and even life changing. I'm glad you are having a good time in NYC!
I would love to hear you, Illana, and Kailey's musings about food, body image, and such from lunch! Perhaps it would make goo blog material. I love New York so! I thought I would be there for undergrad, but I'm pretty happy with how things will work out at U Maryland. But I know I will end up in NYC one day!
You're getting an apartment by yourself?
When I saw your tweet about Adam Levine at Pure Food I thought it was Adam Lambert. I prefer Levine! Wish I was his Pure Food dinner date!
Omg this post is chock full.
First and foremost...why are there no pics of you and the girls out on the town?!!!! You 3 are 3 of my fave blogs and I cannot believe that you dont have pics. Girl, you're failing me here (kidding!) but I do want to see pics!!! I love you all. Wish I was there. Loved that you had a great 3 hr convo, felt amazing afterward and closed the place down and saw Mr Maroon 5. Nice.
Only in NYC! And of course, your opening paragraph, so true about it.
I want to go to Pure so badly, too!
Your crotch shots. It looks good, you can be proud to show it off :)
Your apt search...awesome and keep us posted!
Your 150th post...I was JUST THINKING as i was reading this post that you have come a long way in 5-6 mos..wow. I love you, your spirit, and your blogging has realllllly come into it's own. CongratS!!!

I love banana bread, especially with a dash of cinnamon and nuts in it.
I'm going to be in New York in a few weekends, and this is definitely getting me exciting for the FOOD, SHOPPING, and CELEB SIGHTINGS. Really, with this winning combination, NYC definitely takes the prize for being the most fabulous city in the US.
Would you mind if I email you and pick your brain about restaurants/museums/the best way to spend a full day in New York? I really want to make the most of my time there!
Looks like a great dinner at Spring St. Natural! I've been there several times. When are you moving to NY? Are you already apartment hunting for school this fall? Anyways, I know that goes, so good luck!
aww iv never been to NYV and i REALLY want to go!! :( xxx
sounds like a long day! i can't believe you paid $16 for that dessert? omg! haha. like you said, it was good though!
I am so envious of so many parts of this post! I'm glad you had such a great time, and your pictures are absolutely mouth-watering, especially that $16 doozy of a dessert. The next time I'm in NYC, I definitely plan on a pure stop myself!
As far as cities go, this girl is in love with Barcelona. I've never flirted so hard with a city that winked and pouted back at me with secret alleys and fiery spicy tapas!
Bread - cornbread and pumpkin bread are my absolute favorites <3
I LOVE nyc as well! So cool you re getting an apartment :) I want to go to pure!! and angelica kitchen...aswell as all the other awesome restaurants there aha..I wasin nyc yesterday and went to the specialty food expo at javitz center with my friend who owns a candy store..it was heaven food from all over the world! and free goodies and samples...I lso love the union square farmers market..I wish I lived in nyc :P
The last bowl of miso I had was loaded with tofu too. It was so much nicer than a cup of broth with two little pieces in it! I would have spent the sixteen buckaroos on that sundae too. Mint chocolate chip is my favorite icecream ever.
My favourite city is Montreal. It has all the necessaries like good food (and wine!) and shopping, but it also has so much history! The sightseeing there is incredible.
I'm dying to go to NYC though. It looks like you had so much fun! I seriously died when I saw that sundae. Chocolate and mint is my favourite combination!
That's awesome the apartment search went well. I hope you get the one you want! :)
This post is making my exciting for my trip to NYC this fall! I'm going to have to check out these fun looking places. Thanks for the ideas :)
Ahh - I heard about your sundae on Ilana's blog!! Jealous you lovely ladies all got to get together!!
NYC is hands down my favorite :)

i love NYC and grew up spending a lot of time there! but i LOVE LOVE DC, where i am living now. i think it's the perfect city for me at this moment!
is Saint Marteen a city?? lol. I do love NYC whenever I'm there..
I've been wanting to go to pure food and wine forever! I love her "cook"book. Realllly jealous.
Looks like a fun meetup! So cool that you saw a celeb! Hope you move here for good! That sundae looks to die for. I think I would have spent $16 on that baby too!
Isn't New York City great? It's definitely my favorite city, partly because of all the great food. I haven't heard of Pure, but I'll have to add it to my list of restaurants to try on a visit there.
Hey Gabriela! I've missed some posts -- are you moving to NY? It looks like you're having an amazing time . . . and how cool that you met a celeb to boot!
That sweet bread sounds absolutely AMAZING! I'd definitely go for that one!
And I'd say NYC is definitely up there with my favorites.. along with Dublin and Galway in Ireland. And London! But I haven't been to many big cities in the U.S. So jealous that you're going to be living in an apartment in NYC!!!
Yeah so I'm DYING to try the Power Fu sandwich after seeing it on your blog so many times, it looks so good!
Love you girl!
First off- congrats on 150! That's so crazy to think about.
I love Amy's blackbean soup but usually only doctor it with Greek yogurt & spices.
Montreal is my favorite city- I've been four times now and it doesn't get old. As for bread, I love it all!
Have a fantastic day!
Maybe I am biased because I live near it, but Chicago will always be my favorite (US) city. The people, food, scenery... everything is lovely.
Now, if you want to talk about famous global city, count me in on Paris. Oui, je parle francais et j'aime Paris. C'est la plus belle ville dans le monde! I finally went there last summer for the first time... Paris and I are in love. I can't wait until I get to go back.
SO much fun!!! I love NYC. I used to live just outside and I still go back pretty frequently.
I have been living in LA for a while and I think it is wonderful, but there are a ton of things that suck too. I think the best cities in the world are London, San Francisco, and Cape Town!
My favorite city that I've visited is New Orleans! I had an especially great time because we stayed inside the french quarter with friends & were treated like V.I.P.'s the entire time!
so much going on in this post! mmm. i actually really love nyc, i didn't think i'd fall in love with it, but alas, i have! also san diego (LOVE) and i'm sure i'd probably love san fransisco, but i have never been.
coconut cream pie larabar, yes, seriously the best flavor.
best bread? anything well made, and seedy. i love when the crust is chewy, and you really have to sink your teeth into it. focaccia is pretty damn good too though- how can you not love bread that is basically just pizza crust?
