In early January, I said I was going to start doing reviews whenever I saw a new movie; ironically, I made that decision before my longest movie-going break in awhile. Last night, though, my friend Jillian and I went to see The Vow. I didn’t have high hopes going in, but being a twenty-something female, I’m genetically programmed to need to see anything that includes Channing Tatum, Rachel McAdams and lots of cheesy lines about love.

In case you’re a bit discriminatory with your movie choices, The Vow tells the story of a young married couple, Paige and Leo, whose perfect nuptial bliss is interrupted when Paige loses her recent memory in a car crash. She wakes up from a coma remembering nothing from the past four years, which happens to be the time frame in which she stopped talking to her parents, ditched law school, became a hipster and met Leo. The movie basically chronicles Leo trying to win Paige back. Complicated.
The verdict? Meh. Like I said, I set the bar pretty low for this one, and in some ways, it did pleasantly surprise me. The first half of the movie was pretty funny and romantic- lots of deadpan sarcasm and loving glances from a shirtless Channing Tatum. Can’t complain. I really liked that the couple was kinda weird; that’s what makes relationships fun, and I think a lot of chick flicks gloss over the goofy stuff. However, the movie took a pretty bad nosedive in the last half hour, becoming insanely cliched and boring. The ending isn’t hard to predict, but I felt like the buildup could have been a little more interesting. The Vow does get major props for being based on a true story, though. I’m a sucker for real-life fairy tales!
So, overall? Go see it with a girl friend if you’re in need of a chick flick outing, but don’t get too psyched. And I wouldn’t advise bringing your male significant other unless you’re ready to go see Ghost Rider in return…

I’ve not seen this yet but it sounds pretty similar to 50 First Dates! I’ll probably watch it anyway though because I’m a sucker for a chick flick.

ah, see, I did the opposite! I set the bar super high (we’re talking “The Notebook” status) and was definitely disappointing. Channing in v-necks was redeeming, but the movie itself just didn’t “grab me” like I thought it would.
Am I the only girl on the planet who’s not totally obsessed with The Notebook? I think it’s cute, but it doesn’t blow me away..
I want to see it pretty bad. I am a sucker for any kind of chick-flick, sappy, sobby, dramatic movies, especially if Channing Tatum is involved with his shirt off, haha! I also love Rachel McAdams, ironically, I liked her in Red Eye, b/c she was kicking some bootay, and then in The Family Stone, but of course I am a sucker for the Notebook. I don’t really have a favorite chick flick, well maybe, Clueless, also, Titanic was the first adult like/chick flick movie I was allowed to see. I, like the rest of the world, was in love with Leo. Did I say was? It seems like he gets better looking each year!
See, I wish he could be perfectly preserved circa 1996, Romeo + Juliet era. He was PERFECTION then.

I haven’t yet seen The Vow but I haven’t heard wonderful things! I am totally still going to see it. I think a lot of people set the bar high with two stars like Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams in it, as have I!
Ha, not Ghost Rider!! lol I have no real desire to see this movie, but my one friend was super excited to see it and then was disappointed. I’m not a huge Channing Tatum fan, either.
I haven’t seen a movie in over 5 years. And I’ve lived. Hey, I have blogs to read and Barbie clothes to fold and ABC books to read, over and over and over…

I’ve heard the same things- I want to see it but I shouldn’t expect to be blown away. The shirtless boy is one of the ups to watching the movie
Interesting assessment, that seems like what I’ve been hearing across the board with this one. I’ll probably wait until I’m on an airplane to see it (no joke, that’s where I see all my movies…), but I think I might enjoy it! My favorite chick flick is Clueless. By far.

Even if it wasn’t that great, I still really want to see The Vow! I don’t usually have very high expectations for chick flicks… as long as they’re cute and not terribly acted, I’ll probably like them!
I almost went to see this today but remembered that the reviews weren’t that great so I opted not to waste my day off on something less than worthwhile. I’ll wait for the DVD.
I still need to see The Vow…. definitely on my list of ‘things to do’!!! My favorite chick flick hands down is The Notebook…it gets me everytime!
The Vow wasn’t at all what I expected, but in a good way. From the trailers I was anticipating a super-romantic chick flick: reliving their first date, first kiss, hey look they’re in love again, etc (maybe they marketed it that way for Valentine’s Day?) But in actuality the premise was much deeper and more interesting: what would you do if you woke up one day and discovered you’d become a completely different person, but had no memory of doing so? Which life would you choose? I actually identified much more with the old Rachel so it was interesting for me to contemplate which path I’d choose if it was me, and made me think about whether our live journeys are random or inevitable. Not what I’d call a chick-flick and not really comparable to the Notebook, but very thought-provoking and definitely worth seeing!
