Guess who’s 22 today?!
Aww, wee Gabriela, many moons ago. Eyeing up that frosting, as usual.
Truth be told, I’m not a big birthday person. I don’t like being the center of attention, so going out to dinner with family or friends is way more my style than a big bash- tonight my parents are taking Lauren and me to dinner at their favorite restaurant. Should be fun! I still can’t really wrap my head around the fact that I’m 22, though.
I have an elephantine memory, so last night lying in bed I thought back to some earlier memorable birthdays:
- In 2008, I took an accepted students tour and ate in the dining hall at Carnegie Mellon, where I went for my freshman year of college. Nerd out extraordinaire.
- In 2006, my parents and friends threw me a surprise Sweet Sixteen party a few weeks after my birthday, even though I told them not to. I figured it out the day before and was mortified as I walked in, but it ended up being a really fun night that my parents worked very hard to put together. The cake was awesome.
- In 2004, my parents let me watch Thirteen, which was rated R. FYI, don’t show your fourteen year old that movie. Awkward discussions.
- In 2002, I saw A Walk To Remember in theaters with my mom, then threw a hissy fit when she made me go to cotillion that evening. My refusal wasn’t about my birthday- I was way taller than all the boys and still scared of them.
- In 2000, my family went to The City Tavern, a colonial-themed restaurant in Philadelphia where the waitstaff dresses up in period costumes. I was going through my American Revolution phase. Such a special, special child.
- In 1998, I had a Titanic-themed party, complete with a miniature Rose costume from my grandparents. My parents dressed up like waiters and served us “fancy” foods, and then I subjected everyone to looking at my ridiculous collection of Titanic books. Again, so special.
- In 1995, I had a pink-themed birthday party, where the invitation explicitly asked everyone to wear pink. One of my friends showed up in a dark green taffeta dress. I was so cross.
- In 1993, I had a Beauty and the Beast-themed party that all my cousins came to. My grandparents gave me a Beauty Barbie in a wedding dress, which I actually still have.
- In 1992, we were skiing in Breckenridge, Colorado. Or rather, my parents were skiing, while I was in daycare. Yup, I very vaguely remember this- the room’s walls were brownish yellow with a big red stripe in the middle, and everyone had a red cubby for their things, and it smelled like plastic ski boots.
- In 1990, I was born! On Super Bowl Sunday, no less. Hope you didn’t want to watch that game, dad…
The best thing about this birthday? The job search is over! Yesterday I was offered a full time internship with an awesome PR agency near Philly. Everyone there is so welcoming, and I have a feeling I’m going to learn a ton- I start on Monday! Best birthday present ever.
What are some of your most memorable birthdays? Did you have any fun-themed parties growing up? A close friend of mine had an American Girl themed party one year. Coolest birthday on the block.

Happy Birthday to you! And congrats on the internship…looks like it’s going to be a great year!
Thanks Parita! I hope so!
Happy birthday, girl! I’m so happy for you!!! Scoring that internship really is the best b-day present.
Oh you have no idea how good it feels to know I WON’T be just sitting around this time next week. Thanks for the birthday wishes!
Happy Birthday! So proud of you on the new job! How exciting! <3
Thank you love!
Congratulations on the job!!! And happy 22
Thanks Robin!
Congrats on the internship!! And happy birthday
My favorite birthday memory probably is from when I was little and my parents had a party for me at Build-A-Bear. My friends and I all got to make our own bears and then pick out outfits. I think all my friends who were there would agree it was pretty awesome!
I went to a party at Build A Bear in sixth grade! I still have my bear somewhere…
Happy birthday and congratulations on the job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That really is a wonderful birthday present!
Also, I love that you had a Titanic party. That is awesome. I may have one next weekend…just for kicks…
Oh we had another my junior year of high school for the 95th anniversary. Totally normal.
Happy Birthday! I can’t believe how many birthdays you remember! That’s awesome!
Also, congrats on the internship!
I remember EVERYTHING. Except when it has to do with science and/or math, haha!
Happy Birthday and congrats on the job!
I am orginally from the Philly area and love the city, so I am curious where you will be working! It sounds like a great experience.
Also, I had no idea you went to CMU freshman year. I went to Pitt (and just graduated in April)… small world. Anyway, I hope you have a great day!
Small world, I had a few friends from Pitt! Where in Philly are you from?
Happy Birthday and Congrats on the internship! Definitely an awesome birthday present.
My most memorable birthday was my eighteenth. I had my AP Calculus exam which marked my final big exam of high school and the end of a month of straight studying (no really, I woke up, went to school, studied, ate and went to sleep). When I signed the exam at the end I thought, “well, now I’m an adult.”
I took the SATs on my sixteenth birthday. We’re hardcore.
Happy birthday and congrats on the internship!! I don’t graduate until next year, but since I’m a PR major I’ve been looking at a lot of different agencies for internships. I would love updates about the type of work you’re doing and how it goes!
On my 11th birthday, I took my friends to the Titanic exhibition in Seattle. It was great
I’ve seen that exhibition in multiple cities…it’s so cool!
Happy Birthday! What an awesome birthday present! YAY for the good feelings you are already getting about this- I am a firm believer in your gut knowing all. Again, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
I believe in that too
Thanks for the birthday wishes!
Congrats on the job, and happy birthday!
Somehow I didn’t know you went to CMU as a freshman, that’s right by my house! New York is definitely way cooler though
.
Good luck on your first day!
Small world, right?!
Happy Birthday and congrats!!!! Enjoy being 22.. it was a life changing year for me!
I remember reading your blog when you turned 22…seems like last month!
Happy Birthday and congrats on landing the internship. That’s so exciting! I remember being really excited about my 22nd birthday, too! I was three months into living in my first apartment ever, and loving life! Enjoy this year!
Haha and I just moved back home with my parents. I still think it’ll be a good year though!
Happy Birthday!! I have GOT to say… I am SO jealous about your new job! I’m a communications student living right outside of philly and you are living my dream! Congrats! Can’t wait to hear more about it!
Thanks Jamie! Where in Philly do you go to school?
Happy birthday and congrats!!!!
Thanks Brittany!
I love birthday’s! My favorite was an “Aladdin” themed birthday I had one year. My mom even got a princess jasmine cake and decorated the house and back yard in the “a whole new world theme” streamers and balloons!
Disney Princess themes are the best, clearly!
Happy birthday and congrats! I actually snickered at your self-deprecating “such a special child” comment. Too funny, but our quirks are what make us us!
Oh I was VERY special. Pretty sure I was 35 at the age of nine…I was obsessed with books and hated to play.
Happy Birthday and congrats on the new job! Let me know where your job is! Once you get settled in maybe we can meet for dinner after work some night if it is near Philly!
Congrats on the job and happy birthday! I work for a ad agency in Fort Washington (live in the Philly), so I’m really curious about where your job may be. Glad you seem excited about it!
Thanks Rebecca!
Happy Birthday and congrats!!
Thank you Jessica
happy birthday, and big congrats on the new internship! so excited for you. I love your memory…I remember so much from my childhood, but not necessarily birthdays for some reason. except I do remember my 5th grade surprise party – I was not pleased at 1st, but I think I ended up having fun.
It’s so nerve-wracking walking into a room with a bunch of people yelling at you! They’re more fun to throw than to have, I think
Happy birthday and major congrats on the job! Yay!!!!!!
I totally watched “Thirteen” right around that time too, with my mom. We were equally horrified.
Um, how disturbing is that movie?! I’m 22 and I STILL don’t act the way they do. Terrifying.
Happy Birthday!! And congrats on the job! SO EXCITING!
Thank you! I am SO EXCITED!
happy birthday, gabriela! and major congrats on the internship!
Thanks Juliette! Hope everything’s going well for you in NYC…funny how we keep missing each other in different locations by just a few months, haha.
Happy Birthday, Gabriela! Congrats on getting the job—sooooo excited for you! Your parents are awesome. I can’t believe they dressed up like servers for a Titanic themed bday party. Oh btw, I’ve been meaning to tell you…there’s a restaurant in DC called Thai-tanic. I think of you every time I hear/read about it
.
That. is. awesome. I hope they have Thai-tanic decorations too…I’m imagining like a cross between Asian and Victorian decor…
HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I love 1998. That is awesome.
I should have mentioned the fact that I had a friend bring me a giant jar of pickles as a present one year. Only you could appreciate
Happy Birthday love! Hope you have a wonderful and relaxing weekend!
Happy birthday girl!
Happy Bday, Gabriela!!! I can’t believe you’re still only 22! I think of you as 35 because of your maturity and wisdom and always have! I remember when you weren’t even legal…it was even more shocking
Congrats on the job…THAT Is Awesome!!!!
Haha, “precocious” was what my fourth grade teacher called me. Thanks for the congrats and the birthday wishes!
Happy birthday and congrats! My first day at my current job was actually on my birthday, and, after having spent the past two months as an unemployed college grad, I thought it was the best gift of all!
I’m actually interested in getting into PR/marketing/advertising so I’ve been applying for internships at agencies recently. I can’t wait to read about yours!
Peace of mind totally IS the best gift of all!
Happy Birthday !! Hope it’s an awesome one and Congratulations on the internship!!
My birthday always arrives around Memorial Day Weekend so some of my most memorable birthdays are those I can spend down the shore with my family / friends.
I have a good friend whose bday always falls near Memorial Day too. It’s such a fun time of year!
Happy Birthday! Congrats on the internship!!
Thanks Jen!
Happy Birthday!! You look so much like your mom now…I love that.
Also, that Titanic themed party sounds amazing.
I know, that’s what everyone says! Can you believe she’s 42 in that picture?! She’s 60 now and still looks about 45, so I hope I get those genes!
happy birthday beautiful girl!!
my favorite birthday might be my sweet sixteen…new drivers license and car=freeeedom!
enjoy your day and your b-day dinner!! xoxo!
Agreed! Getting my license was the best feeling EVER…though in PA you can’t get it till 16.5!
Happy Birthday Gabs, and congrats on the job! What a great present, of sorts! So happy for you!
And I love the flashback to your birthdays…though it makes me feel old that you were born in the 90′s…hehe.
Thanks Melissa! Yeah, sometimes I wish I’d been born just 27 days earlier so I could say I was an 80s baby. It blows people’s minds that someone born in the same decade as a 13 year old is old enough to have graduated from college.
I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again, you are so incredibly mature for 22! I hope you had a great birthday – and congrats again on the job!
Thanks Chelsey! Ha, I am until you get a few slices of cake in me, and then I get frosting drunk…
Happy Birthday girl!! and congrats on the job!
Thanks Lori and Michelle!
mega congrats. im glossing over the 22nd birthday thing since it makes me feel wayyyy old. so excited to hear about your job stuff…i hope you can share stuff!
Thanks Elise! Let me know when you’re gonna be in Philly in a few months, I’d LOVE to catch up with you!
You’re so funny!! — “A special, special child.” hahaha!
Now that I’m 29 (still not old, I know, but…) I’m realizing holy crap I should’ve enjoyed my early 20′s so much more rather than just thinking about the fact that it’s just a ticking time bomb until 30!
Hope you had a great day and congrats on the job!!!
I’m like you, not big on being the center of attention, but I think my favorite birthday was actually my most recent one, my 29th! (yikes…) so many of my best friends came out that I was beyond flattered and we went to a daytime club at a rooftop bar in Downtown LA where they were having a pool party type event, and then we barbequed at my house that evening (well, I kind of remember that part, anyway, hah)
I say wrap your head around being 22 and enjoy it
A rooftop bar sounds like such a good way to spend a bday!
Wishing you a very wonderful day! Happy Birthday girl!
Thanks so much Lauren!
Happy birthday AND congratulations on the job girl! What an awesome birthday “present”!
Is the job related to your culinary degree at all?
Haha how did I know that you would have had a Titanic themed party?
My most memorable birthday was my 13th, when my parents rented a limo to take me and my friends to go see Harry Potter!
My 13 year old self is supremely jealous of your HP party.
Happy Birthday, and congrats on the internship! I started my current job the Monday after my birthday too
.
Happy belated birthday! My birthday was yesterday, too. How weird!
Happy birthday to you too then!!
It makes me feel so old when I hear that people were born in the ’90s, ha. I found your blog through Popsugar awhile back and wondered how the job hunt was going – congrats!
