In New York, it’s been my experience that “happy hour” rarely stays within the 5-7 time frame. You go out for a quick drink with a friend, and before you know it it’s 10 pm and you’re still sitting on a rooftop with a bucket of beers. That’s exactly what happened to me last night…not that I’m complaining!

Last night I went out with my roommate from my freshman year at Carnegie Mellon. I had a $50 Groupon to use up at a place called The Hill in Murray Hill, so we met there first and ordered some appetizers to share.

Hummus and pita (I liked the veggies and pine nuts sprinkled on top)

Edamame

We also had one of their specials, appletinis. I’d never had an appletini before, and while I’m usually not a huge fan of sweet cocktails, this was strong and sour enough not to make me feel sick.

From there, we wandered just a block down the street to a place called Tonic East, which pulled us in with its third-floor rooftop bar.

It was a gorgeous night, and the bar had great views of the Empire State Building. Sometimes I get frustrated with the noise and people in this city, but then I have a night like this one and I forget why.

While we were there, we split a bucket of beers- is there anything more summery?

I got home around 11 and crashed immediately, but not before remembering to pull down my shades. As a result, I managed to sleep until almost 8 this morning- 9 hours? I’ll take it.

Which do you prefer- happy hour or going out at night? Since happy hour ends so late and nightspots don’t usually get going until 11 or 12 around here, I definitely prefer happy hour. Best of both worlds!
