Souen and Momofuku Milk Bar

Tonight I met up with the lovely Caronae for dinner at Souen, a macrobiotic restaurant I've been meaning to try for awhile!

Initially we had planned to go to the uber-trendy Momofuku Noodle Bar, but after calling the restaurant to ask about vegetarian options it seems like I might run into some issues there. Souen ended up being a delicious replacement.

When I saw Souen pickles on the appetizer menu, I knew I had to give them a go! I was expecting real pickled vegetables, but this was just kind of a lightly dressed pile of cabbage, cucumbers and carrots. Good, but not really worth the $5.50.

Thankfully, my entree redeemed the appetizer fail.

I got the spicy miso ramen bowl: organic zucchini noodles with bean sprouts, cabbage, carrots, Chinese cabbage, corn, kimpira, kombu and leek, all in a spicy red pepper miso broth.

I loved the spice in this- it was enough to make my mouth hot, but not so much so that I couldn't eat it. It was chock full of vegetables and sprouts, which my body welcomed.

Caronae opted for a noodle bowl with rice noodles, which was newer to the menu and isn't listed on their website yet. I have no idea what was in it, but she seemed to like it as well!

Fully satisfied, we ventured to our next stop: Momofuku Milk Bar.

I'd heard many great things about this unique dessert bar, but had never actually been there. Looks like I've been missing out- this is definitely a place to come back to once Lent is over!

The milk bar is known for its wacky flavored soft serves, cookies, cakes and pies. Like a "birthday cake" made with Fruity Pebbles with minimalist frosting (Which I didn't really understand. Why skimp on frosting?)

Or the Frankenpie, comprised of two slices each of "crack pie," candy bar pie, cinnamon bun pie and grasshopper pie.

They even had crazy beers! Porkslap pale ale and Moo Thunder stout.

Caronae got a cup of their infamous "cereal milk" ice cream, which she raved about.

Apparently it tastes like cereal-flavored ice cream. Clearly, I need to return after Easter!

I'm always glad to have blog friends to try foodie spots with. Not many people get really excited about cornflakes in ice cream and five choices of noodles for your ramen bowl, but Caronae is one of those people and I'm glad to have her as a friend!
