Soy and Sake

My first night back was a blast! For dinner, Mike and I headed to Soy and Sake, a Japanese/Pan-Asian vegetarian restaurant in the West Village. I actually lived just two blocks away from this place last year and never stopped in- something I'm regretting now that I've tried it!

The inside of the restaurant was really cool, with a gigantic tank full of exotic fish in the center.

This poor little guy seemed to be stuck upside down the entire time we were eating:

Just keep swimming...
Soy and Sake had an extensive menu of Asian appetizers, entrees and sushi. To start, I selected my favorite miso soup.  This was packed with tofu and seaweed at the bottom- just the way I like it!

Mike ordered the roti canaai as an app: an warm, doughy, lightly fried Indian crepe with coconut curry and soy chicken dipping sauce. I wanted to wrap myself in the roti, it was so good.

I was intrigued by the long sushi menu, so I ended up ordering two huge vegetarian rolls:

The Veggie Lover roll, packed with cucumber, avocado and asparagus topped with mushroom tempura and vegan eel sauce.

And the Hawaii roll, which included banana tempura, avocado and Korean pear topped with fresh mango and sweet mango glaze.

These were terrific, but paired with a dish of brown rice it was way too much food to finish! I ate half of each- first the veggie, and then the Hawaii. The latter was super sweet, which made for a perfect sweet & savory "dessert."

For his entree, Mike got the szechuan (soy) beef. Surprisingly, he preferred the veggies in spicy sauce to the faux meat, and gave me his remaining soy patties to take home. I'll have quite the lunch today!

Because of my sweet sushi I passed on a real dessert, but I did try a few bites of Mike's non-dairy Coke float. Soy-based vanilla ice cream melting into old-school Coca-Cola. Yum.

Overall, I'd definitely return. It's awesome that they offer exotic rolls for vegetarians- usually you're limited to plain old cucumber and avocado!

Happy belly
After dinner, we headed to a party at my friend's Jillian apartment, which was a lot of fun. It was a chill, relaxing way to start the semester- if only I could just eat sushi and hang out with friends instead of doing homework come tomorrow!

Hope you all have a wonderful start to your Sunday!
