So, You Want to Start a Blog?

Hi everyone! The most common kind of email I receive from readers is on how to start a blog. I don't consider myself a blog expert by any means and certainly have a lot of things I still want to accomplish for this site, but I have collected a few tips and tricks over the past year that I'm happy to share. I know that Gracie, Meghann, Julie and several other bloggers have posted about this as well, so check out their thoughts too!

1. Determine your blogging goals.
The biggest reason I stopped my first attempt at blogging was because I felt lost. Take the time to think about it- what kind of blog do you want (healthy living, recipes, life, etc.)? What will be the main focus of your posts? There are many types of blogs and you shouldn't confine yourself to just one category, but stay aware of the general direction you want your blog to go in.

2. Time is of the essence.
This point is twofold: first, blogging takes up a lot of time! I spend at least an hour a day on posts alone. Factor in things like commenting on other blogs and responding to emails, and it's easy to become attached to your computer! Don't get me wrong, I love every minute that I spend blogging and interacting with other bloggers, but finding a balance can be difficult. Experiment with posting schedules to find one that feels manageable for you.
Second, it takes time to build a reader base and gain a following. I remember being so frustrated at first because I felt like no one was reading! Don't get discouraged- keep posting and slowly but surely, your readership will grow.

3. Connect with other bloggers.
For me, the best part of blogging has been forming friendships. It's not possible to make "blends" with everyone, but if you really love someone's blog or connect with their message, don't be shy- reach out to them. Comment away, create a Twitter account to keep up with everyone, and if it's possible, attend conferences. Finding others who share my passion for healthy living has not only made blogging more fun, but it's kept me continually motivated and excited about it.

4. Remember that what you put on your blog is accessible to anyone.
It's easy to type out your deepest thoughts, hit publish, and assume that no one you know in "real life" will ever see it. But in the era of the Internet, that's never a guarantee. I've recently edited some of my older posts, because there were certain things that I didn't think long and hard about before publishing. Don't feel like you need to censor your thoughts entirely, but be aware of the possibility that your friends and family might one day discover your blog- or you might want to tell them about it yourself!
Also, just as friends and family can track you down, so can strangers. Use caution when talking about where you live, where you work, your full name, etc. Better safe than sorry.

5. Be yourself.
When I first started my blog, I was a bit hesitant to let my true colors show- what if people thought I was weird? But real people with strengths, weaknesses and unique characteristics are more relatable than a perfectly edited robot-blogger. Remember that this is your space, and letting your personality shine through will not only make blogging more enjoyable, it attract others to your words, as well.

Keep in mind that this is just the tip of the iceberg- there's always more to learn! Maybe I'll write another post on publishing/formatting/pictures/etc., if there's interest? Happy blogging!

Breakfast this morning was- you guessed it- another raw oat bowl! It's like a cross between oatmeal and cereal. What's not to love?

Raw oats, banana, blackberries and almond milk, sprinkled with cinnamon before digging in.

Hope you all have a wonderful Thursday!
