I got an astonishing 10 hours of sleep last night, which left me feeling refreshed and energetic when I woke up this morning. Breakfast was a huge bowl of Kashi GoLean, blueberries and almond milk.
Later in the morning, I hopped on the elliptical to finish watching Eat, Pray, Love, which I've been watching in increments. read the book four or five years ago and wasn't a huge fan, so while overall I enjoyed the movie, it didn't win me over completely.
*Spoilers ahead!*
One of my qualms with Elizabeth's story is the view of her first marriage- I found it so heartbreaking that her husband fought the divorce, arguing the fact that he made a vow, that he wanted to make amends, and that he was still dedicated to a life with her. I feel as though the movie didn't treat the subject of divorce as well as the book did- of course, it's a movie, but I disliked how more attention was paid to the trials of her next relationship than the trauma of her broken marriage.
Furthermore, while her journey was beautiful and life-changing, it's not a realistic for most people. Traveling for an entire year is a huge luxury, regardless of your savings. There are many forms of self-discovery, and though I know I still have a lot of learning to do myself, I don't think that dramatic actions are always necessary to learn to love yourself. The places Elizabeth visited encouraged her transformation, but ultimately her change came from within, and I think that should be taken away as the overall message- more so than the power of culture shock.
So, what did I like about the movie? Well, it was certainly beautiful. It made me want to see the world, and to discover what makes me happy outside of my little bubble. I also really, really loved this scene (which Gina recently posted as well). By the end of the movie, Elizabeth's self-assuredness in her body and life is really refreshing- I've always thought that Julia Roberts is a great role model for young girls, and she's perfect for the role!
