Lunch Before the Storm

Just got home from Philadelphia as the flurries are starting to fall outside my window. Whew!

This afternoon, I met the lovely Shannon for lunch at Farmicia, a restaurant in Old City that emphasizes "great tasting food and beverages crafted from local, organic and artisanal producers."

Shannon and I actually went to the same middle and high school- she graduated a year ahead of me. How funny is it that despite going to school together for six years, we actually reconnected through blogging?

I'd never heard of Farmicia, so I when Shannon suggested it I was excited to try something new. The restaurant was cute and cozy yet airy and simple, giving it a both homemade and modern feel.

Crisp green Granny Smiths made creative centerpieces.

While waiting for our meals, I ate some sesame loaf.

I was pleased to see that even the pared-down lunch menu included several vegan options, including a hummus & avocado sandwich, veggie burger, hummus plate and tamales. Choosing what I wanted was a tough call, but eventually I decided on the tamales, since they were the most unique of my options.

Tres tamales with vegan chorizo/vegetable filling, re-fried black beans, pickled cactus salad, spicy salsa roja.

Outside/inside

The refried beans were meh, but the salsa had a terrific smoky flavor and the cactus salad was different in a good way- full of cilantro, spice and onion.

While chowing down, Shannon and I gabbed about old classmates, blogging conferences, running, school, and our mutual love for food. She was a fun lunch date!

And now, I'm back home waiting for the third blanket of snow in the last few weeks. Hopefully this little storm doesn't interfere with our flight to Orlando tomorrow afternoon. I can't wait to thaw out a bit in the Sunshine State!

Have you ever reconnected or run into an old acquaintance in an unconventional way?

Tacos, tamales, enchiladas or burritos? I'll admit that I had to ask our server to remind me what tamales actually were. I always get the different varieties of Mexican food mixed up!
