Megu

Though I've already been incredibly lucky in the delicious meals department this weekend, this evening I completed my final leg in the triathlon of eating.

Mike's 21st birthday isn't until Tuesday, but in the midst of finals craziness we decided to celebrate together tonight instead. As part of his present I took him to Megu, a famous Japanese restaurant.

The birthday boy had mentioned wanting to try it several times before, and I figured that a 21st birthday merits a fabulous meal. Plus, their early-bird prix-fixe menu is a good deal cheaper than the regular seven-course meal!

The inside was beautiful and modern with an Asian twist:

For the first course, we had a choice between an Oriental salad, a sushi & sashimi plate, and a Hijiki seaweed tofu salad. I chose the last.

The salty seaweed went perfectly with the sweet tang of the ginger dressing, and the tofu was plain- my favorite way to eat it.

The main course was a choice between silver cod, Kobe beef and tofu steak. Guess which I chose?

The tofu came out on a hot iron plate, lightly fried with a hint of sweetness. It was served with shiitake mushrooms and a tamari-based sauce.

My entree was served with a bowl of the ubiquitous white rice. I drizzled it with the remaining tamari sauce and gobbled it up.

Mike, meanwhile, ordered the Kobe beef, which came out raw. Our waiter instructed him on how to cook it on a sizzling river stone:

First, he greased the stone with a piece of fat.

And then he laid each piece atop of it for about thirty seconds. It was so cool to watch!

What a pro.

We also shared a side of garlic vegetable fried rice with crab meat. So good.

For dessert, we both selected the chocolate cake. I was a bad girlfriend and didn't ask the waiter to bring out a candle...oops!  (I am baking him a full cake for Tuesday though)

It was good, but nowhere near as exquisite as the other two courses. I still polished my plate, though!

I must say, after a weekend of big-time meals I'm ready to return to a simpler and cheaper way of eating. It was an absolutely incredible foodie weekend that I'm incredibly thankful for, but I think I've eaten out enough for awhile! Hope you've had a wonderful Sunday :)

What was the highlight of your weekend?

I've spent the weekend in my room writing papers. I did manage to relax a bit last night with Scatagories and some tasty wine, though.

This meal looks amazing! Mike's a lucky guy to have a girlfriend who is willing to eat out one more time for his sake :) 21 is a big one - hope you guys get to celebrate it with some drank!

Wow. What an absolutely wonderful meal! Sometimes home-cooked meals are just absolutely wonderful (and easy on the wallet!)

The highlight of my weekend was sleeping in today after a week of grueling 5-9 hour rehearsals for show choir. My other highlight is that tonight was our last practice and our show is tomorrow! :)

All your food this weekend looked delicious! But as fun as it is to eat out at restaurants, it's always SO nice to get back to simpler, homemade food.

The highlight of my weekend was finishing a paper... it wasn't a very exciting weekend haha.

amen girl! I just posted a similar sentiment last nite..that even tho I do love desserts and joke about them, after traveling and road food, just eating green plant based food, simple, cheap, simply prepared..is the best!

but that choc cake looks pretty darn good..but i bet pure's is better. thanks for telling me i need to put their dessert on my life's bucket list. you are a true foodie and a conisseur of good food. vegan and otherwise. and a new yorker who knows what good food is. and if you say it's that good, i trust you :)

You eat at all these amazing places! You need to recommend some resteraunts for me, so that I can indulge if I come to the big city! Any excellent non-vegan and vegan options?
