Horizons Philadelphia

Just a few days ago, I mentioned wanting to go to Horizons, the vegan dining experience in Philadelphia. Well, wouldn’t you know that I got the chance to eat there this evening, with one of my most favoritest blends?

Gracie and I met at Horizons at 6 pm, their first dinner seating. Though we were the first people there, by the end of our meal the place was packed!

The restaurant had a cute, natural-yet-sophisticated vibe. I personally like it when vegan restaurants have an elegant look- it helps to break the stereotype that plant-based cuisine is only served on hemp placemats.

After contemplating the menu for a bit, I decided to get two appetizers instead of a single entrée. (I’d eaten quite a few finger foods at my mom’s gathering earlier in the afternoon, and it’s always more fun to try two things anyway!)

My first pick was the ramen bowl: grilled baby bok choy, pickled shiitakes, menma and pho broth.

I never thought I’d say this, but I really don’t mind shiitake mushrooms. They’re not about to become a staple in my cooking, but they’re definitely the least offensive fungus in my book!

My second dish was the Jamaican BBQ seitan, with smoked potato salad, celery branch and ras el hanout.

It was delectable! This might be the best seitan I’ve ever had- it was just meat-like enough for the strong BBQ flavor, without tasting like a gross meat substitute.

Obviously, no vegan meal is complete without a sweet J I chose something chocolatey (surprises abound, right?): the bittersweet chocolate tart.

Complete with pumpkin ale ice cream and orange marmalade. Oh my word it was phenomenal. The orange was the perfect complement to the strong chocolate flavor. I didn’t really care for the ice cream, but to be honest, ice cream in general isn’t really my thing- I much prefer desserts you have to chew.

It’s been awhile since I last saw Gracie, so it was great to catch up with her. We really hit it off when we first met over the summer, and it’s hard to believe I’ve only known her for a few months, because we have so much in common and always have such a blast together!!

What's your favorite vegetarian protein- tofu, tempeh or seitan? I think seitan comes first for me, with tempeh a close second. I like tofu too though!

Ice cream or cake?

Hi Gabriela! Have you done 4 Course Vegan yet? If you haven't, you must go. It was my absolute favorite thing to do when I lived in New York this past summer. The food is amazing and the whole experience is so unique!
I mean, one guy cooks for thirty people in his own loft! It's incredible!

How fun you can meet up with Gracie, or any fellow blogger, for that matter! I live out in the boondocks where no one ever goes :P (okay, so maybe that's only partially true.)
The seitan dish looks awesome. That's tied with tempeh for my favorite - though I haven't made seitan in ages!

That's awesome that you and Gracie live close enough to meet up! I barely know any bloggers in Canada, let alone in my area. :P

Tofu is my favourite, but I haven't tried seitan yet. It sounds good though, especially the kind in your dinner!

Ohhh, I have heard GREAT things about that restaurant! How cool that you got to try it out!

My order would be tofu...tempeh...and then seitan. But I like all three, really!

Have a great Thanksgiving, Gabriela!
