Last night, I met with Ada and Caronae at Candle Café, the more laid-back little sister to my all-time favorite restaurant, Candle 79.
To start, we shared a guacamole appetizer. It’s no secret that I love guac, so this had my name written all over it.
For my entrée, I was contemplating the soba noodle salad, but once Ada placed her order for a vegetable platter, I changed my mind. Good thing too, because this was delicious!
One thing that Candle Café has Candle 79 beat in? Portion size! Can’t complain about that. This contained sautéed broccoli, sea vegetable salad, roasted beets and sautéed cauliflower + snowpeas, with carrot ginger and roasted garlic tomato sauces. I annihilated the whole thing and was left with a serious fiber baby.
Dessert was debated, but once Caronae mentioned a new frozen dessert place she wanted to try, I was sold. We headed a few blocks away to Simply Peeled, which specializes in “Fruizo” made with only three ingredients: fruit, water and cane sugar.
Think banana soft serve, only with more flavors and a $4 price tag ;) Worth it, though.
I selected a cup of pumpkin flavored Fruizo topped with carob chips. Mmm.
Very tasty! I loved that it tasted like plain old pumpkin, instead of something pumpkin-flavored. Natural tastes are always best.
As good as the food was, the company was even better. I’d met both Ada and Caronae several times before, but it was nice to sit down to an intimate dinner and get to know them better. I
t looks like I’ll be making a trip back up to Candle this afternoon- I left my credit card there while paying last night. Silly Gabs. Hope you have a great end to your weekend!

I had no idea that there was a Candle Cafe - that's so cool! I'm assuming the menu is similar to Candle 79?? That guac looks strikingly as good as the one we ordered that time :)
p.s. I *might* be in the city this evening - still not sure - I'll be sure to let you know!! xoxo
mmm I love Candle Cafe! They seem to be centered around actual veggies more than C79. My choice is usually the Indian Plate special!
holy yum that sounds like my perfect meal... a whole lotta veggies and a refreshing healthy dessert! I've never tried carob before.. does it taste a lot like real chocolate?
I have been dying to try simply peeled, and now your pictures make me want it even more!
Oh no! You left your credit card there??? That's too bad:( You should treat yourself and get something special to take home for dinner.
I had such a nice time last night, we should def get together again soon! Have fun at Pure tonight:)
Yum! The veggie platter looks like the perfect dinner and fruizo sounds great. I would have gotten the pumpkin with carob chip too!
Yum! I am sometimes nervous to order veggie plates for dinner because some restaurants kinda shaft you and bring you like a scoop of buttered over-cooked mix.
I'm also a huge fan of REAL pumpkin and haaaaate the flavored stuff. Case in point: Dunkin's Pumpkin Coffee is TERRIBLE (imo)!
Have a great Sunday chica!! xox

clever girl..."accidentally" leaving your credit card behind. haha. thats wat id do and then conveniently go get it right around lunch time. i love candle cafe. never made it to candle 79 though...
Looks like a great meal and a delish dessert. I've never heard of the Fruizo thing, sounds good!
Aww, Gabs! Cute nickname.
At leas you left your credit card somewhere safe! Once I left mine at the gas station, luckily, I was able to retrieve it. Have a great Sunday!
I love reading your blog to see where I should eat next time Billy and I come to NYC. Both places look delish.
I get so jealous of you New Yorkers and all your amaaaazing places to eat. I am visiting San Fran in January, so at least I'll be able to hit up all the gems I read about from the Foodbuzz festival!
That restaurant definitely knows how to do a veggie platter properly. I hate it when they skimp on the veggies!
You must be having a blast with all these blogger meet ups lately. It seems like you're going to them all the time! :D
