The Social Network

Done with my longest half-marathon training run to date!

This morning, I set out to accomplish eight hilly miles. Since I lent my Garmin to Mike this weekend for a race he’s running in NYC, I decided to just run for an hour and fifteen minutes, the amount of time I estimated it would take me to complete the distance.

I felt great! The weather was perfect, and it felt good to just run without worrying about the time. I think I might have gotten discouraged by how much hills affect my pace, so it was good to not think about it.

For breakfast pre-run, I had a bowl of Fiber One, blackberries and almond milk.

Though it was only 11 when I finished my run, I was already hungry enough for a leftover lunch!

I had a heap of whole-wheat pasta with homemade tomato-carrot sauce, along with a pile of homemade tabbouleh topped with tahini.

Tabbouleh is my mom’s specialty, but usually I could pass on it. The addition of tahini really made it much better!

Afterwards, I had a pear and an apple.

With Naturally Nutty cinnamon vanilla sunflower seed butter for dipping.

This was a super filling lunch- perfect to refuel after my run!

Last night, I saw The Social Network with my parents. I loved it. Not only was it snarky and hilarious, it was also really interesting to learn about the beginnings of such an internet phenomenon. One of my favorite parts of the movie was seeing how much the Facebook platform has evolved in the past few years…I remember getting my FB over four years ago, and the page was so much less cluttered then!

To be honest though, I wish Facebook had stayed a strictly college thing. As the movie pointed out, Facebook started as a means of putting the college experience online- it was a way to check up on your friends, to know who was dating who, and to see pictures of parties and other social events. Though it’s great that FB connects so many people, I think it’s a little invasive to continue the very college-like fascination that Facebook encourages after college. I won’t be deleting mine any time in the foreseeable future- after all, it’s one of the main forms of communication for my generation, and as a blogger I’m obviously not opposed to social media- but the whole phenomenon kind of makes me nostalgic for the pre-Facebook days, when life seemed far more private. What are your thoughts?

Great job on the run - well done!! Annnd is there a recipe for the carrot-tomato sauce? It sounds lovely!
I kinda see what you mean with Facebook - I remember not being able to join cos I wasn't in uni! Old times. And it does promote a lot of stalking (I wouldn't know what half the people I've met are up to it if it weren't for it!), plus I find it weird my dad and his friends have it, and go on my profile :s But then...facebook stalking is fun :p

i totally agree-- i wish facebook was solely college-based. it's uncomfortable knowing there are 213434 people in this world who can 'check up on you'. my entire fam is on fb lol. so awkward.

Mmm, I love homemade tabbouleh! I don't mind facebook being open to everyone because honestly, the entire internet is really invasive.

I love Facebook. I live really far away from pretty much everyone I know and I wouldn't be able to keep in touch with them if I didn't have it. And it's so nice to be able to contact someone when all you know is their name.

I did 8 miles this weekend too! That's one thing I love about the blog world...someone somewhere is running with ya lol

Facebook has changed a lot over the years...it's becoming the new My Space. I deny almost every event invitation/page/application because it just spams up your inbox :/

Good job on the long run!! Like you, I think Facebook is a great way to stay connected to friends whom you otherwise may never see/talk to you again! That being said, most (like probably 80%) of my FB "friends" are people whom I was never really friends with at all!

Well, I don't think I need to tell you where I stand on Facebook :) Like you said - I think it's a *great* way to connect and stay in touch with people. The problem is, though, are we "connecting" in the way that we as human beings should be?? Or is it more impersonal than ever? Obviously it depends on the individual, but it's still a bit worrisome to see how face-to-face interaction has become less and less prevalent.

Who am I to talk, though? I am a blogger, after all :P

Hope you had a fab weekend at home!!! xoxoxo

I too believe Facebook should be strictly for college students - I don't document what I do at college for my family's sake! The blog is more than enough for that:)

Totally agree with FB! It is weird being friends with my parents!

I loved the social network, too! But I agree about it staying for college. Since I'm in college right now, it is easy for me to say that I want it to only be for college students, but I guess it would be sad in a few years if I couldn't get on it anymore! I have a mixed opinion! But one thing I am sure about is that I LOVED the movie! :)
Have a good week!! Also, great job on your run!

Great thoughts on the Social Network! I remember when it expanded from college to high school, and it still felt pretty exclusive even then. I saw Justin Timberlake on the Daily Show the other day, now I DEFINITELY have to see the movie!

Nice job on the run!

Hmm yeah I kind of agree with you about facebook! I feel obligated to accept friend requests from people like my younger sister's friends and my friends' parents, but it can make it pretty awkward!

But on the other hand it'll be a good way to keep track of everyone after college... I would hate to no longer be allowed on it after I graduate!

I like my privacy and have never had an account on facebook. If I'm interested in what people are up to I'll call or email them.

I do think...it's a little scary how a potential hirer can find you (even if you've got everything privatized...) and not hire you based on something on your fb page. I love FB though, and I really don't have anything to hide...i mean...I blog about it all. haha

Nice job on the run! I agree, I wished when I was in college that FB had stayed a college thing. I remember when my mom got her FB account - ugggh she was the first parent EVER to get it. Of course, I felt like I needed to put her on a "limited" profile, but who was I to stick pictures of myself that I didn't want her to see anyways? Oh well...

I'm sure I've probably read your blog before, but for some reason I took a little longer to peruse this morning and Oh my GOLL! I want to eat everything you create. I'm a very impressed by your simple, healthy, yet delicious concoctions. :)
