That's amore

Bonsoir mes belles! I loved reading all your feedback for the last few posts. Thanks for all the music suggestions, movie input and memories!

I started today off with a bowl of Simply Fiber, Arrowhead Mills Spelt Flakes, Almond Breeze and a sliced banana, topped with cinnamon:

Today was a "rest" day for me, since I'm getting ready for an 8 mile run this weekend! I'm not sure which day it will end up being, but I wanted to make sure to take it easy on my body for awhile. I used my usual gym time to clean and organize my part of my room. With three girls living in just my room, and eight girls in our sweet, it gets messy and yucky fast! I also went to the resource desk to pick up two packages that had just arrived! I've been luck with the mail this week :)

Package #1, from Progresso soup, through a giveaway I won at the Hott, Healthy Housewife:

2 cans of soup, a HUGE mug and a jumprope!

I'm already in love with the huge mug, and though I don't eat meat, I'm going to pass the soups onto my parents, who love Progresso! Thanks, Therese!

Package #2, my secret bloggie Valentine gift from Jasmine at Sweet and Fit:

Green & Black chocolate, Larabars, a picture frame, dish towels, candles and a cute ornament!

Best package ever! The Laras and chocolate definitely make this amazing! And as nerdy as it sounds, I LOVE the dish towels...my apartment ones have been getting gross and I needed some new ones! Thanks so much, Jasmine!

Around 11, my friend Steve, who is visiting the city for job interviews, called and asked me if I'd like to get lunch around 1. I agreed, and had a salad snack to tide me over:

Arugula, tomato, and humnut sauce

For lunch, we went to a place called Burger Creations near Washington Square. I'm not usually one for burger joints, obviously, but this place was cute and fun looking and had a yummy sounding veggie burger on the menu, so I was game! I had a Mediterranean Veggie burger:

Chickpea patty on brioche bun with yogurt-cucumber dressing, with added avocado, pickles, tomatoes and roasted peppers

This burger was great! I don't usually order veggie burgers at restaurants, but this one was outstanding. It had a great tomato flavor and a hint of spice- yum! I also stole some of Steve's fries, of course. (Sorry for the bad pic, by the way...this was a stealth camera phone shot!)

After lunch, we hung out for awhile in the city and I did some errands before we decided to head up to the Bronx to hang out with Mike (they're best friends). On the way, I munched some trail mix:

And while we chatted in Mike's room, I also helped myself to some unpictured Trader Joe's peanut butter filled pretzels. SO GOOD! These babies are addictive :)

A little while later, we headed to dinner at Dominick's, an amazing Italian restaurant on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx. It was by far some of the best Italian food I've ever had! Everything was served family-style, and we went with a seafood theme for our food:

BOMBA$$ calamari rings; shrimp linguine in spicy marinara, broiled flounder in lemon butter sauce, garlic asparagus, delicious bread with olive oil for dipping

Everything was absolutely perfect! The restaurant was a pretty no-frills place, but the food was fantastic. I had a huge pile of calamari rings (we cleaned the plate between the three of us!), a large heap of pasta with plenty of shrimpies, a fillet of flounder, about 3/4 of the asparagus (boys aren't big veggie eaters, apparently) and two slices of bread, accompanied by two glasses of Chianti. Yum! I left with an Italian food baby and a very happy tummy!

Afterwards, we headed to Mike's friends' apartment to have some fun. I had two beers before declaring myself flagged for the night in case I take my long run tomorrow. Plus, I've been trying to listen to myself and have another drink only when I really want to. I want to enjoy college, but not feel pressured to get wasted just because everyone else is! I felt fine, and still had a lot of fun. These boys always have the best baked goods, and even though they had a huge bowl of Valentine's candy, I kept it under control for Lent. Plentiful tropical trail mix and Goldfish is definitely just as good though!

Thanks so much to Veg is Sexy for the Sunshine Blogger award! I'm supposed to pass it onto 10 other bloggers who give me sunshine, but I just spent 15 minutes trying to figure out who the ten would be and seriously couldn't narrow it down. I know it kind of defeats the purpose to pass it on to everyone, but I'm not being a total cheeseball when I say that you ALL bring sunshine into my life. If you haven't already been passed it, consider yourself tagged!

By the way, forgive me if I'm a little slow commenting this weekend- my Google reader is currently bursting, and I've learned that it has a funny habit of continuing to grow! I'll catch up before the weekend is over, I promise :) Have a great weekend loves!

What's your favorite kind of ethnic food?

What a nice package! You can never have too many Larabars (or chocolate). I know what you mean about not wanting to be pressured to get sloshed every night- I'm the same way :)

Favorite ethnic food = Mediterranean!

Fried Calamari and me go WAY WAY back.

As for favorite ethnic food, I most certainly have to go with Chinese, just because of the huge variety to choose from - not because it's better than the rest.

I'm actually not a huge italian food fan, but I absolutely lurrrrrve indian and sushi! I did have REALLY good italian at this tiny little place on fifth ave. what was it called...Gulianos? I can't remember lol.

Anyway I agree with the whole "not getting wasted just to get wasted thing." I find that to be the case all the time, where the theme of the night could so easily just be to get drunk, and definitely have been employing that 'drink minimally' or at least reasonably rule myself. I think it's a good one, especially the next morning haha!

Hey Gabriella!

Loving your blog girl, and as a fellow Pescetarian, it's great to get new, creative meal ideas!

My fave ethnic food would have to be Greek - I adore hummus, greek salad, fresh fish, tzatiki and baklava to satisfy my sweet tooth:)

Have a great weekend & good luck with your 8 miler!

Fave ethnic food? Might have to be Chinese. I just had Chinese last night (and I mean GOOD Chinese of course) and it always makes me pretty happy. Now if only there were more actual GOOD Chinese joints outside Chinatown! SO not convenient for me.

Sarah @ Daily Nibbles said...

Oh, I've got an 8 miler too! I really love Thai food.....I need to find more Thai recipes. There is a dish that I get at a restaurant in Vermont that has veggies and basil in it. The addition of the basil is awesome in the stir-fry.

wigglewyrm said...

I'm all for most Thai food and I love Mexican (probably has something to do with growing up in California, heh)

So completely jealous of your dinner.. calamari is one of my favorite foods on the earth and it's SO hard to find good calamari.yum!!
The veggie burger sounds great too!
I agree with you on the drinking. It doesn't take much for me to get me drunk and I hate that feeling so I've learned what I can handle.

Italian food is by far my favorite ethnic food with Japanese closely behind :)
Have a great weekend!

Your meals out sound delicious! That is one heaping plate of calamari rings! Lately, I've been addicted to greek/mediterranean food, such as chicken kabob, hummus, greek salad, tabouli, and grape leaves. I can't get enough garlic apparently. Have a great Saturday!

I love that the burger place had a veg option-- so nice.
I've never had calamari though I used to have to chop it up at my job in high school-- I worked at the Clam Castle. Nice.

Sounds like you had a great social evening.

That package certainly IS amore!

Italian food is actually my least favorite ethnic cuisine. I think it has something to do with the fact that it is EVERYWHERE. Maybe I just got sick of it and now hold a grudge? I love cuisines with a little bit more of a kick. Mexican food (anything with beans, vegetables, flour tortillas, and HOT salsa), Thai food (which is in line with my philosophy that coconut milk makes everything better), and sushi (because I'm weird and like all meat/fish as raw as legally possible) are my favorites, I think. Oh, and Indian... come to think of it, I'm not sure I could pick one.

Such great packages!!! I love Green & Black chocolate!

My favorite kind of ethnic food... ugh, that's a tough question! I love it all :) Not too long ago I tried out ethiopian food and I was pleasantly surprised at how delicious it was!

The restaurant sounds yummy -- that part of the Bronx is supposed to have some of the best Italian food in NYC; I'll have to check it out sometime.

Happy weekend and good luck on the long run!

Wow you've definitely got a stash of bars there, girl! Yuuummy. My first thought was that my favorite ethnic food is Indian, but then I realized that I'd totally forgotten about Chinese and Japanese. So now I'm totally torn and can't decide!

Haha I keep forgetting you're also in NYC and whenever I read you go to places I frequent, I'm like, ohhhhh hayyyy!!

I won the Progresso pack from a blog, too, and lol since I'm a vegetarian I use the cans as weights when I jog on my treadmill. I love the jump rope though.

Favorite ethnic food? Is that a trick question? I love all food, jeez! I'm currently obsessed with Thai food (I mean, I spent seven weeks there, it's understandable), but I love love love...well... everything. All the different Asian cuisines...Chinese, Japanese, VIETNAMESE (omg), Greek (hello?? can we do a blogger meetup in Astoria and go for Greek food??), Indian, Israeli cuisine, Persian food, Spanish cuisine (and, like, everything I ate when travelling in Nicaragua, so Central American food too) ... ummm ... the list goes on and on and on .. I'm an adventurous eater. Seriously. Hard question.

lookthroughmyspecs said...

I love sushi, thai, and indian food. I never had tried any of them before I came to college - I guess living in Vermont with parents who aren't very adventurous eaters means that there are a lot of things I've never been able to try. I'm so happy to live in a city with OPTIONS now!

so glad you liked the package! I feel awful that it got to you late - I have been having a lot of issues over here, and wasn't able to make it to the post office in time. so sorry!
