Bonjour mes belles! Hope your weeks are off to a good start! Mine certainly is, as I’m practically in a delicious food coma as a write this. I just got back from a Restaurant Week dinner at One if by Land, Two if by Sea with Mike. It was amazing! More on that in a little bit J
Last night I tried to get to bed at about 10, but unfortunately didn’t finally get to sleep until about 2. So frustrating! My roommates were both up super late, and despite the NyQuil I’d taken for my head cold, I just couldn’t fall asleep. Weirdly enough though, I was wide-awake when my alarm went off at 6:15. I couldn’t complain, though I’m super tired now!
As usual, I made the chilly trek to the gym and ate a Luna bar along the way:
Lemon Zest Luna
This was the first flavor of Luna I ever ate a few years ago, and I still love it. It’s super tangy- perfect for a pre-workout wakeup snack!
Today’s workout was my first time trying Week 4 of Gina’s Winter-Shape Up. She introduced supersets this week, and I’ve discovered that supersets = super hard. I did:
Superset 1:
- 12 overhead presses (20 lb on the machine)
- 12 saxon side bends on each side (5 lb weights)
- 20 jumping jacks (I omitted the burpees because of my knee)
Superset 2:
- 1 minute plank
- 10 renegade rows on my knees on each side (5 lb weights)
- 20 mountain climbers
Superset 3:
- 10 incline stability ball bicep curls (7.5 lb weights)- these were HARD!
- 10 stability ball tricep extentions (10 lb weight)
- 1 minute high knees
I omitted Superset 4 because I’m deathly afraid of lunges (it’s how I dislocated my patella), and squats hurt my knee; instead, I did some ab work (medicine ball twists, bicycle, etc). I ended up doing the whole circuit three times.
As usual, weight training made me super hungry, so I made a big bowl of cereal before heading to class:
1 c Kashi GoLean, 1 c Arrowhead Mills Spelt Flakes, ½ c Original Puffins, strawberries, vanilla and unsweetened vanilla Almond Breeze
Hit the spot. Since I’m going home for the weekend on Thursday, I’m running low on food supplies and decided to grab a sandwich rather than run home for lunch. I stopped at Cosi and got my favorite:
Hummus and fresh veggie sando on white flatbread ( I asked for whole grain, but didn’t realize the mix-up until I’d taken a bite and decided to just eat it anyway instead of waiting for a new one) with baby carrots and a pear for balance
Cosi is definitely my favorite chain restaurant. Their bread is just amazing, and their sandwiches are always fresh and full of yummy ingredients. Plus, you can order tabletop s’mores- yum!
After classes, I headed to the Apple store in the Meatpacking District to finally resolve my WiFi situation. Good news? With a new Airport card, I can connect again! Bad news? Stupid thing cost $200. At least I didn’t need a whole new computer, right?
I came home ready for some snackage. Enter: chia pudding.
WholeSoy & Co. plain yogurt + 1 T chia seeds, left in the fridge for half an hour
This was my first time letting chia seeds sit, and I loved the consistency it gave the yogurt! It reminded me almost of tapioca pudding. I also had an apple + Mighty Maple for dipping:
I met Mike for dinner at 6 at One if by Land, Two if by Sea, an incredible prix-fixe restaurant in the West Village that is participating in NYC Restaurant Week. Rather than the usual $80 menu, you get three courses for $35. Still not everyday cheap, but definitely a deal for the quality of food. I know not everyone shares my opinion, but to me a truly unique and memorable meal is worth splurging on. I was hesitant to share my meal at first because I don’t want it to seem like I’m obsessed with expensive food, but I decided that you, as fellow foodies, might be interested! It created a wonderful memory and encouraged me to look at dishes in a new way. Some of the best restaurants in the world are in this city, so I love that Restaurant Week makes them available to a wider audience! Do you consider an expensive but unique and delicious meal “worth it?” If not, what do you like to splurge on? Clothes, trips?
In any case, One if by Land, Two if by Sea was definitely worth it to me. The ambiance was absolutely beautiful: soft piano music, low lighting, and gorgeous murals.
For dinner, we got three choices each for three courses. They started it off with a tiny bowl of potato-leek soup, which I enjoyed with sunflower seed bread. There were actual huge seeds throughout the bread- yummy! For my appetizer, I chose a walnut-beet salad with arugula, walnuts, and citrus vinaigrette (sorry about the poor picture quality- I felt weird using a flash!):
Mike chose the duck terrine as his first course- brave soul! For my entrée, I decided on the wild red snapper with pesto risotto. Despite hating the taste of meat, I absolutely love seafood, and this was no exception. The risotto was awesome, as well! (Mike had a steak with sweet potatoes and onions, and was kind enough to share his sweet taters with me):
Hands down though, my favorite part of the meal was dessert. I chose a milk chocolate fondant cake with dulce de leche, praline ice cream and corn flake macaroon (Mike got carrot cake with walnut ice cream, which I sampled and wasn’t nearly as good…but I am a chocoholic!):
Overall, it was an incredible meal and perfect date night! Sometimes it’s nice to go out and have a fun meal for no other reason than to spend time together J
I hope you all had a wonderful evening as well…anyone else have a new or particularly delicious dinner tonight?

PS- There’s a huge snowstorm closing in on the northeast right now, and NYU is one of the only schools that isn’t closed yet. I’m keeping them crossed! Any of you have school or work cancelled for tomorrow?

Great workout! I've been thinking of trying her workouts!! Glad you didn't have to spend more than $200 - eek! I am not big on splurging on dinners - just not worth it for me as my stomach tends to get so upset! I prefer to splurge on clothes, drinkies or weekends in general!
Great eats! I especially liked your veggie and hummus sandwich - can't go wrong with hummus! And my university isn't cancelled, but we do have lots of snow!! And for your sake I hope NYU cancels their classes :-)
Your dinner looks great! I hope classes are canceled for you. I live in Detroit and most schools have announced they are closed tomorrow! If it was only the same for work...
what a GREAT meal and great workouts girl!! im not big on splurging on dinners-unless the company is DEF worth it!
I graduated from NYU last January...good luck with that they NEVER close!
So instead just don't go... ;)
Yum! That meal looks awesome! I love splurging on fancy meals-- but we don't do it very often at all! That way, they really feel "worth it" when we do. Restaurant week is so cool! Just another perk of living in a big city!
I enjoy a really nice meal for a date, it gives you a chance to enjoy food and your company.
Looks like a great workout even without the extra set! All your meals look super yummy by the way!! :)
No...and I miss it! I'm in Chicago now and moving to LA in August. But let me know if you ever need any help or advice! My e-mail is sexyveg@gmail.com
I'll have to try one of the other Jocolat flavors! Thanks for your post!
Dinner looks great indeed!
I've never tried Cosi before. I'm clearly missing out. I wish I had one near me!
I LOVE Cosi too:) We don't have one in Vermont, but I like to go eat there when I visit my family in Ohio.
Aw I love date nights! So fun. I might love lunas Lemon Zest even more though.
Eating an amazing meal is definitely worth the splurge. I would totally go to restaurant week if I were in the city!
CMU is closed for the 3rd day in a row - at this point, everyone is just paranoid about the amount of work that is going to be thrown at us to catch up. If you get a snow day, I hope you can enjoy it!
We have a Cosi back home but I've never been to it! It sort of looks like a Panera?
I definitely splurge on food. I think a good meal is worth more than a top :)
phew! good thing you didn't need a whole new computer, that woudla sucked! those lemon zest lunas are so good, very tangy!
aww what a great date- definitely worth teh splurge!!! and i lOVE cosi. i went there tonight too :) one of hte workers actualy told me the "whole grain" bread isn't whole grain!! they bake it in something, i dont remember what, but it even has 20 extra calories (not that it matters but he told me that for some reason)..weird, huh?? lemon zest lunas are SO good!
what a great date and time you had...totally looks amazing! thanks for posting the pics and for the lemon luna info. not a flavor i have ever had but hey, i should try it. I have only had one luna in my whole life LOL
Omgosh I'm just like you--vegetarian but lurrrrve my seafood! ;)
Your dinner looked great...brings me to my fab dinner tonight--went out to sushi with a friend! we went to this p which lace called 'sushiland' where a revolving line of sushi goes around and you can pick out what you want--so good, so addicting! ;)
Your dinner + date look fab. Fingers crossed for you for no school tomorrow! Stay warm lol
btw thanks for fb friending me :D night!
Don't be afraid to share such restaurant meals! I'm with you it is completely worth spluring and you had the incredible opportunity to try it at such a bargain. I was so sorry that my family didn't visit NYC during restaurant week. We still got tontry some wonderful meals.
Love the lemon Lunas, too! (Alliterationnnnn)
I don't do squat or lunges either! When I first started really getting into working out, I injured my knee (I think it was an overuse injury...treadmill + lunges + squats...idiot.)
I've found other booty and leg strength exercises that work for me!
Oh wow girl... that dessert looks out of this world!! I am a chocoholic too.. nothing is too chocolately for me (is there really such a thing?!). But the meal looks fabulous in general. I think it's definately worth it to splurge once in a while and enjoy a great unique meal with some wonderful company. Glad you had fun :)
Oh I love One if by Land, Two if by Sea! I'm a big seafood fan, though.
I'm always in awe of NYU's unrealistic expectations regarding weather, especially since the majority of my teachers commute by train and are late anyway as it is. Most classes I imagine will end up cancelled.
I think insomnia is making its way through the bloggies because there's a bunch of us who can't sleep lately! Hope you get lots of zzz's soon!!
I LOVE that Cosi sandwich! Their bread is amaze! What a great dinner!!
awesome work out! your eats look amazinggg. i hope your sleeping improves:)
amy<3
Sounds like a good workout. Supersets are really hard, but don't you feel so great afterwards?
ahh I'm afraid of lunges and squats also, mostly bc i'm not very good at them, hehe.
have a wonderful wednesday lovely lady
bec xo
Gosh, I wish there was a Cosi near me. I am such a big bread fan!
And I am serious bargain hunter with everything - except for food!
how long does it usually take you to do your wkouts?
Good luck with the snow ;) We are BOMBARDED here in DC!!!!
I neeeed to get some chia seeds. I'm reading about them everywhere lately!
Wow look at your workout! That's motivation girl. Dinner looks incredible! I too feel funny about using my flash in a restaurant. Sometimes I feel funny lugging my big ol' camera around too taking pictures of my food. People are probably like "What the hell is that girl doing?!". :)
hey girl! woah awesome workouts you got there(: and that dinner looks amazing! i love lemon lunas, so good. have a great day! xoxo soph
that is one serious workout... YOU GO GIRL!!
lovely meal :) the ambiance sounds beautiful!
Happy hump day gorgeous!
AHH that flatbread looks amazing.. delish!! :)
Happy Wednesday, hun!!
Thanks for commenting on my blog! I'm so jealous you live in Manhattan! I hope to end up there someday!
oops i forgot to answer your question from the other day! sadly i live about 6 hours from santa barbara :(. but there's always a chance that i'll be traveling around during spring break so if i end up being in central/socal i will DEFINITELY be hitting you up so we can meet face to face, which would be awesome! you're going to have such a fun trip, SB is a cool town
I think spending a few dollars on a special meal is JUST as important as cooking something special at home! Sounds like a fantastic evening!
I don't mind splurging for a really good meal. My one requirement is that the atmosphere in a restaurant be worth the price of the meal. I never understood how anyone could go to the hole-in-the-wall type place because they like the food. I still want the atmosphere too.
Hello!!!!!!!!
I never tried the Lemon Zest bar, will have to, it just always seemed like it would not be yum to me!!!
Great workout love!!! THanks for sharing your yummy dinner you and Mike had, looks amazing!!
love ya! xoxo
I've never heard of Cosi, but seeing that veggie sandwich makes me want to go find one!
Also, I really want to get on the chia bandwagon.
ahahah, I hadn't heard about the pebbles in the ears making you deaf. Now I'm really freaked!
ahhh i've ALWAYS wanted to eat at one if by land two if by sea!!!! i'm so jealous! i hear its the most amazing restaurant and experience! next restaurant week i definitely need to give that a whirl. i loveee restaurant week i think its such a great way to get to try foods and places that are out of the normal reach!
I've never had a luna zest bar but I really should look into it :) Most lemon bars are a real disappointment to me because I LOVE sour foods.
Btw the Larabar lemon flavor is GREEEATTT. :D
